How to Fold a Pocket Square: The Classic Fold

by Ties Planet style correspondent Lil Neale.

We’ve spoken quite a few times here on the Ties Planet blog, about how a pocket square can be a simple but effective way to add a finishing flourish to any outfit – elevating your look from just meh to wow. A folded handkerchief is a cost effective way to add that essential dapperness to your look. But what’s more important than it may at first appear, is the way you fold that hankie. You see, there are several different folds and each is specific to an occasion or event – as always, the devil is in the details.

Because we’re here to help, and we recognise that it’s not as simple as just shoving it in your top pocket, we’ve created a series of guides to help you wear your pocket square just right, complete with visuals. Today, we start with the Classic Fold.

Follow the tips listed below to achieve this tried and tested, laid back fold. This is the ideal square to wear to take your everyday wardrobe up a gear – wear it tucked into your jacket pocket on a night out with the boys, or for a informal Sunday lunch with your family. You could even rock this one in a more creative work environment – pair with dark jeans, a soft, cream shirt and an open colour. A sports jacket or tweed blazer will help the Classic Fold to shine.

How to Fold a Pocket Square: The Classic Fold

1. Lay your handkerchief face down on a flat surface

2. Lengthwise, fold one side of the square to meet the other

3. Fold the bottom end up to meet the top

4. Adjust the width of your square to fit your jacket pocket

It’s as simple as that! Shop the full range of Ties Planet handkerchiefs to find a colour and a style that suits you. Because the edges of the Classic Fold don’t exactly line up, this is a great way to wear a rolled edge or square with a coloured border. The Ivory Silk Handkerchief with Aqua Trim (£14.99) would look fantastic with a tan jacket.

What’s your favourite fold? Let us know down in the comments or over on Twitter @TiesPlanet. We’ll be back in two weeks to show you the next in the series.
